Transforming Intranet Efficiency: One Unified Portal at a Time
Overview
A large metropolitan utility provider required a suite of intranet portals to manage internal service requests across multiple departments, including Human Resources, Finance, Electric Operations, Gas Operations, and Storm Response. These portals support workflows such as work orders, refunds, transfer corrections, vehicle home requests, and vacation approvals, simplifying request submission and managerial review. Built to handle high transaction volumes, the applications streamline eligibility determinations and service authorizations while providing real-time visibility into compliance and service delivery.
Goal
The project focused on modernizing intranet portals across multiple departments, delivering a robust solution that enhances the user experience. A custom Angular framework was developed to streamline the approval process and enable seamless script embedding. Azure APIs were integrated to provide secure authentication, while a SharePoint Online site enabled remote access without compromising functionality. The goal was to deliver responsive websites rapidly, backed by thoughtful design and reliable user support.
Challenge
During the modernization of multiple intranet portals using the new framework, the team encountered several complexities, especially while migrating from the legacy platform to the new environment. The effort required not only data migration but also the transfer of associated attachments. To address this, the team developed multiple C# console applications to read .xsn files from the legacy system, extract the data into Excel, and load it into the target database. This approach added technical complexity and required close collaboration, iterative testing, and validation to ensure accurate and efficient data flow across systems. Despite these challenges, the team remained focused on delivering a robust solution that improved overall service delivery.
